City of the Living Dead

aka Gates of Hell

Dir Lucio Fulci / 1980 / Italy

Anticipating problems with the Censorship Board, Hoyts Distribution pre-cut the film before submission. This 2459.62mtr (89m 54s) print, described as 'pre-censor cut version', was rated R in October 1981. However, it was only after the removal of a further 9mtr (20s) by the Censorship Board. The reason for the deletion was:

Violence
Frequency: Infrequent
Explicitness/Intensity: High
Purpose: Gratuitous

The versions on K&C Video (87m 55s) and Infinity Video Sales (86m 06s under the title Gates of Hell) are both cut.

The two most famous gore scenes have been removed or censored.

30min approx-The girl vomiting up her guts has been shortened, as has the scene of her boyfriend having his brain torn out.

55min approx-The scene of Bob having his head drilled has been removed.

There are quite possibly more cuts.

The film made its Australian DVD debut in February 2005 courtesy of Siren Visual Entertainment. At 88m 52c, this version is fully uncut.
