Eaten Alive

Dir Umberto Lenzi / 1980 / Italy

House of Dare were awarded an R- rating in August 1980 for an 2342.59mtr (85m 37s). The R was awarded for sex and violence, which was described as:

Sex
Frequency: Infrequent
Explicitness/Intensity: Medium
Purpose: Justified

Violence
Frequency: Frequent
Explicitness/Intensity: Medium
Purpose: Justified

Although it it listed by the Censorship Board as being registered R without eliminations, it would seem that this was pre-cut before submission. The uncut running time is around four minutes longer.

In 1984 it was rated R in an 85min (v) version. However, the exact running time of the Video Classics tape is 82min 27sec, and is most definitely cut. 89m (PAL) seems to be the most often reported uncut runtime for this, so it looks like the Video Classics tape could be missing up the 6mins of footage.

There is an uncut Italian Language tape released under the title Mangiati Vivi. This is on the Avo Film label and runs for 89mins. In the 80's and early 90's this could be found for rent in stores that stocked Italian tapes.

In 2006, pirated No Name Label copies of the uncut (92m 20s NTSC) U.S. Shriek Show release appeared in stores and markets that sell cheap DVD's. The R18+ (Strong Violence, Strong Sexual Content, Nudity) rating on the cover is fake. It has not been viewed by the censors since 1984. The cover makes no mention of it, but it contains the same extras as the Shriek Show disc.

Lenzi's other Cannibal movies, THE MAN FROM DEEP RIVER and CANNIBAL FEROX also suffered numerous cuts when released locally.
