Supervixens

Dir Russ Meyer / 1975 / USA

Columbia Pictures had this Refused Registration in August 1976. The 2852mtr (104m 14s) print was banned because of "indecency and excessive violence".

The following month Columbia Pictures presented a 2781mtr (101m 39s) reconstructed version to the censors. It was passed with an R-rating after a further 0.8mtr (2s) of "excessive violence" was removed. This print went on to have a theatrical release.

The original version, running 2868.5mtr (104m 51s), was back before the censors in April 1981. It was again Refused Registration, this time due to violence, which was described as:
Frequency: Infrequent
Explicitness/Intensity: High
Purpose: Gratuitous

Regent Trading Enterprises then presented a 2858.2mtr (104m 28s) reconstructed version to the censors. It was awarded an R-rating in November 1981 after the removal of a further 8mtr (17s). These extra cuts were again for violence which was described as:
Frequency: Infrequent
Explicitness/Intensity: High
Purpose: Gratuitous

The reason given for the R-rating was:
Sex
Frequency: Frequent
Explicitness/Intensity: Medium
Purpose: Gratuitous

Violence
Frequency: Frequent
Explicitness/Intensity: Medium
Purpose: Gratuitous

Regent Trading Enterprises went on to give this print a theatrical re-release. It seems that this time the censors had no problems with the sexual content of the film. The 40s of cuts were all to reduce the intensity of the violence. This would seem to indicate that the censorship was made at around the 30min point of the film where Harry murders Angel in the bath. The scene is very prolonged and over the top.

Kiseki released an unofficial VHS in the late 90's.

In December 2005, it was back before the Classification Board who awarded it an R18+ (High Level Sexual References, High Level Sexualised Nudity, High Level Violence) rating. Madman Entertainment released this uncut version in February 2006. It was re-released in December 2006 in a box set titled Russ Meyer's Vixen Trilogy, that also contained VIXEN and BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRA VIXENS.

At midnight on December 30th 2006 the film had its Australian TV Premiere courtesy of the B-Mania season on the World Movies Channel. The film had an R-rating, ran 105m 23s (NTSC), and seemed to be uncut.

Russ Meyer's UP! and BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS also had censorship problems in Australia.
