Dir Russ Meyer / 1976 / USA

Columbia Pictures had this Refused Classification in February 1977. The 2181.70mtr (79m 44s) print was banned because of indecency.

The film remained unseen in Australia until Reagent Trading Enterprises had a 2119.49mtr (77m 28s) reconstructed version passed R18+ in November 1980.  The reason given for the R-rating was:

Sex
Frequency: Frequent
Explicitness/Intensity: Medium
Purpose: Gratuitous

Violence
Frequency: Infrequent
Explicitness/Intensity: Medium
Purpose: Gratuitous

This censored print, went on to have a theatrical release.

In February 2006, Madman Entertainment had the uncut version passed R18+ (High Level Sexual Violence, High Level Sex Scenes). The DVD that was released the following month has a running time of 80m 12s (not including the MPAA X-rating card).

Reviewing the uncut Madman DVD it is easy to see which scenes would have had problems with the censors in the 70's and 80's. These include:

bulletThe sex scene and whipping during the opening of the film. Includes Paul having sex with Adolph Schwartz, and a rear shot of Limehouse's vagina.
bulletThe rape of Margo by Leonard Box (21min)
bulletThe rape of Margo by Rafe (60min).
bulletRafe getting an axe in the back and Homer getting an axe in the chest (63min). Homer killing Rafe with a chainsaw.
bulletSeveral fake erections are shown through the film.

In the 70's and 80's, Russ Meyer's SUPERVIXENS and BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS also had censorship problems in Australia.
