Australian Censorship: Regulation

The Classification Website

The Australian Government's home of censorship. Here you can find information regarding the Classification Board, Classification Review Board and the Attorney-General's Department. This replaced the Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) on July 1st 2007.

It includes the database of censorship decisions, which although much improved, is still far from perfect. Check out the BBFC site (see below) to see how it should be done.

South Australian Classification Council

Quite why this useless and unnecessary organisation still exists is a mystery. Despite Australia having a national classification system since January 1996, S.A. still attempts to keep some control. It made the headlines in 2005 when it increased the rating of 9 SONGS from R18+, back up to X18+. Their 2002-2003 Annual Report shows that they had a total of 44 complaints during the year. Maybe those of you in South Australia need to complain why such a Department is still around in your State.

Standing Committee of Attorneys-General (Censorship)

Twice a year the State Ministers responsible for censorship meet to discuss policy. If we ever get an R18+ games rating then the decision will be made here.

Australian Communications and Media Authority

The ACMA is responsible for the regulation of broadcasting, radiocommunications, telecommunications and online content in Australia. The site contains links to all the various codes that govern these various media.

Advertising Standards Bureau

The ASB is the place to go if you have a problem with an advertisment. Take a look at their database to read hundreds of unnecessary complaints from the general public. Quite rightly most are dismissed.

ARIA Labelling Code of Practice

Details the classification labels used by the Australian Record Industry Association Ltd (ARIA) and the Australian Music Retailers’ Association (AMRA). Contains a link to a list of all the CDs and tapes classified since 1996.

Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulation 4A

Provides details of the law under which customs may confiscate "objectionable goods".

Censorship and Classification in Australia

Part of the Department of the Parliamentary Library, it contains a great overview of Australian Censorship. Of particular interest are the links to all the current  legislation. If you want to know the law and how it applies to you in your home State then look no further.

Worldwide Censorship

Melon Farmers' Video Hits

The most comprehensive film censorship site on the web! Naturally it comes from the UK, a country with more than its fair share of problems.

British Board of Film Classification

One of the strictest censorship boards in the Western world has recently revised its guidelines. Despite these changes they still ban and demand cuts of many more films than our own censors. There database of decisions is however vastly superior to the one on the OFLC site.

Worldwide DVD Forums

UK DVD site that also covers film censorship. Includes a forum dedicated to our own OFLC.

DVD Compare

UK site that compares different DVD releases from around the world.

New Zealand Office of Film & Literature Classification

See how it's done across the Tasman. Things seem to be a little more liberal over there, X-Rated tapes for rent in the local Video Ezy. Some titles that have been banned/cut in Australia in the past, have had uncut releases in New Zealand. Unfortunately, due to the small market the vast majority of tapes are imports from Australia, which means they suffer from second hand censorship.

The Film Society of New Zealand

This is an excellent place to start if you wish to learn more about censorship in New Zealand. In the 1970's the Film Society movement was at the forefront of the campaign to achieve censorship reform. Details of which are now reproduced in the wiki on the site.

Gomorrahy.com

Censorship in Canada. Unlike our own highly secretive ACS, the Canadian Customs make public a list of all titles that they have confiscated. Their Quarterly List of Admissible and Prohibited Titles are reproduced here.

Schnittberichte.com

Excellent German language site that compares cut films against uncut versions. There are enough images here to keep English only readers more than occupied.

movie-censorship.com

English language version of Schnittberichte.com. Not as many entries as the German language site, but this is sure to grow. Good for finding the answer to all those R-Rated vs. Unrated vs. Theatrical version vs. Extended Cut vs. Director's Cut, questions that every film now seems to throw up.

Film Sites

Digital Retribution

The site to visit for all Australian Horror, Cult, and Exploitation fans. News, reviews, and a very lively forum.

pre-cert.co.uk

A database of all the video tapes released in the UK up until mid-80's censorship removed them from the shelves. The  Australian Pre-Certs section of the forum is the place to discuss all the K&C, King of Video, and Starbase releases we know and love. It now houses a database of over 3000 titles released on video tape in Australia.

Phantom of Pulp

The blog of Aussie Director Mark Savage covers a huge range topics. Where else are you going to find Enid Blyton and  Guy N. Smith sharing space?

Accent Film Entertainment

Australian theatrical and DVD releasing company behind such censor baiting titles as IRREVERSIBLE and 9 SONGS. Ended up on the wrong side of the Classification Board in 2007 when they received an RC for the documentary NO BODY IS PERFECT.

Siren Visual Entertainment

Australia's most daring video and DVD company has a long history of releasing challenging films. This has brought it into conflict with the censors on a number of occasions, making it the most targeted non-porn company we have. RC ratings were received in the 90's for TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD, FEMALE VAMPIRE, and VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD. Whilst the past few years have seen IN A GLASS CAGE, THE GORE GORE GIRLS, DARLING, HOOLIGAN, SPOTLIGHT, MY BROTHER'S WIFE, HOLY VIRGINS, and SLAVES TO PASSION all hit with RC ratings. They are also responsible for the release of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, what more do you need to say!

Umbrella Entertainment

Australian DVD company that has issued a number of previously controversial titles such as MANIAC, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, and ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS. They have also been subjected to some modern day censorship with the 2007 banning of FACES OF DEATH 2 to 4. Give them your support
