Information provided by Shane Harrison.

In late 1968, the Italian production of LA MATRIARCA was ready for release. A pre-cut version was submitted to the Italian censors, who then removed approximately a further 2-minute, before granting it a certificate. Radley Metzgar imported the fully uncut print to America, before releasing it under the title of THE LIBERTINE. In 1970, Australia got the censored Italian cut with the American title.

Censored Italian vs. Uncut American

In the 1990s, First Run Features released THE LIBERTINE on VHS in America as part of THE AUDUBON COLLECTION. This NTSC version ran 92:24, and was missing 01:12 of the theme song that played out over a black screen once the credits had finished. Apart from the end music, this version appears to be the full-uncut print.

In 2012, the film was released on DVD in France by SNC under the title L'AMOUR A CHEVAL. This is a beautiful print of the Italian release version and matches the one I saw at the time. It runs 89:11 (PAL), and is missing 01:24 of post credit fade out music at the end.

The Italian version contains some clothed shots, instead of the nudity that appears in the uncut print. It also contains alternative footage that does not appear in the uncut version.

By comparing the American First Run Features VHS with the French SNC DVD, one can see the cuts that were made for its Italian release. The film was censored as follows.

Times are taken from the First Run Features NTSC VHS.

13:08 – 00:06 cut: Mimi (Catherine Spaak) watches a black and white homemade porn film starring her deceased husband and her friends. The 6-seconds are of a frontal view of a naked woman hanging from ceiling being whipped by Claudia. For LA MATRIARCA, this was replaced by a 4-second back view.

13:56 – 00:43 cut: The home movies continue with her husband playing a Doctor examining a topless patient. The cut starts once the patient rolls onto her stomach and has her panties pulled down. The Doctor caresses her bottom and kisses her lower back.

15:09 - 00:15 cut: More films are shown. This cut is of a topless Claudia having her knickers ripped off with a close up of her pubic hair.

38:50 - 01:20 cut: A slow motion fantasy sequence of Claudia, nude in her bedroom. She runs in terror into her bed as the hero comes in and shoots a bejewelled beetle. He then stands over Claudia and slaps her face before kissing her breasts. This was replaced by a shorter clothed take running 00:45 for LA MATRIARCA.

43:04 - 00:30 cut: Rape scene played as consensual rough sex. Removed was a close-up of Mr Tamer mauling the nude torso of Mimi's body double, ripping her panties off, and flashing her pubic hair.

47:06 - 00:09 cut: Semi-obscured nude view of Catherine Spaak's body double as she lies in bed reading a book.

47:30 - 00:09 cut: A beetle crawling between Mimi's breasts and over her nipple in close-up. This was replaced in LA MATRIARCA by a 3-second view of the beetle crawling up to her belly button.

47:43 - 00:06 cut: A beetle crawling over nipple in close-up. LA MATRIARCA has this replaced with a 6-second view of the beetle crawling along her belly.

49:12 - 00:31 cut: Slow-motion fantasy sequence of Maria's lover hosing her down. She is shown wearing an apron with a bib, but is nude underneath. He focuses on her breasts and crotch. In LA MATRIARCA, the scene runs for 00:13, and Maria is fully clothed. The drenching is general, and not focused on parts of her body.

Interestingly, LA MATRIARCA has an extra nude view of Mimi during the Doctor's examination, which is missing from the American print. This occurs at 52:20 where a 10-second nude profile view of Mimi is replaced with footage of the Doctor working the machinery. I cannot explain why the stronger print has this replacement.

Catherine Spaak did some of the nudity herself and used a body double for other shots.

Censored Italian vs. Further censored Australian

The Italian cut that we received in Australia had all of the above missing, along with a further two scenes that were cut from the version I saw in 1970. Times are taken from SNC PAL DVD:

36:00 - 00:03 cut: Close-up of Claudia's breasts as she displays a pendant, with a live bejewelled beetle as the stone.

39:31 - 00:24 cut: A close-up of Catherine Spaak's body double being stripped and kissed during the rape/rough sex. As mentioned above, in this scene, the Italian print was already 30-seconds shorter than the uncut American one. This consisted of a close-up of the rapist ripping the body double's panties off and kissing her.
