Scars of Dracula

Directed by Roy Ward Baker / 1970 / UK / IMDb

Date: 07-1971  /  Rated: A  /  Length: 8575 feet  /  Time: 95:17  /  Censored by 03:42  /  Reason: violence

Information provided by Shane Harrison.

This fifth entry into the Hammer's Dracula saga has been acknowledged as the most violent and sadistic of the series. However, only in Australia could this be marketed as a school holiday release. In mid-1971, the guts of the film were removed by our censors for an A (Not Suitable for Children) rating. Melbourne screened it the following year on a double bill with HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN (1970). It was as a shock to see this neutered mess after having enjoyed, thanks to the new R-rating, an uncut TWINS OF DRACULA (1971) at the same cinema a month or so before.

For Australia, the film was "reconstructed" with nearly 4-minutes removed before getting a release. A less censored, but still heavily modified, version was screened during the late 1970s/ early 1980s on Channel 9's MIDNIGHT-TO-DAWN film show. I managed to see quite a bit of the censored footage when I bought the Derran 8mm film digest release in the early 1980s, before finally getting the full version on Thorn EMI VHS released in the late 1980s.

Times refer to the Anchor Bay DVD, running time: 94:47 (NTSC).

It is worth noting that before securing a UK release, three scenes were removed by the British censors. This cut version was released worldwide, and the footage has never been restored.

BBFC Cut No. 1 - 37:39 - Dracula laps blood from Tanya's chest wound. The scene was cut short as Dracula bends down to feed. This censored shot featured on the cover of the movie novel tie-in in Australia.

BBFC Cut No. 2 - Views of the dismembered limbs of Tanya which were removed from the scene beginning at 45:58 or /and at 46:13.

BBFC Cut No. 3 – Occurs near the end where the Priest's face is savaged by a bat beginning at 84:58.

The Australian Censor took this cut BBFC version and went on to remove the following footage.

10:27 – 00:03 cut: Long shot of savaged bodies inside the church as the vampire bat flies out.

10:33 - 00:18 cut: Close up views of bloody bodies in the church.

11:01 - 00:03 cut: Close up of Maria's bloodied face.

33:14 - 00:19 approximately cut: Dracula biting of Tanya's neck was truncated once he sunk his teeth in. The bloody close-up of his feeding was removed.

37:33 – 00:16 cut: Dracula stabbing Tanya to death.

38:03 – 00:09 approximately cut: Tracking shot across bedroom including views of Tanya's bloodied body with knife protruding.

45:18 – 00:12 approximately cut: Klove removing Hempel's bloodied body from the bed and placing it on the floor.

45:58 – 00:10 cut: Close up of a body part being thrown into a bowl of acid followed by views of Klove chopping up Tanya's body, which is off screen.

46:13 – 00:09: Klove chopping up Tanya's body, which is off screen.

70:17 – 00:09: Dracula burning Klove's back with hot sword.

76:25 – 00:18 approximately cut: Dracula biting Alice ended before she fell to the ground with bloody bite wounds showing.

84:58 – 00:50 approximately cut: Prolonged attack on the Priest's face by a vampire bat, shredding it in repeated close ups.

86:37 – 00:07 approximately cut: Simon finds Paul impaled on a hook hanging from a wall. In Australia only a quick view of Paul was shown, which was from the second view of him in the uncut print.

91:11 – 00:06 cut: Close up of Sarah's bloodied cleavage.

92:43 – 00:30 plus collectively cut: All close ups of Dracula's face as he burns, plus surrounding footage.

Interestingly, close ups of Dracula's bloodshot eyes that were repeatedly removed for a SOA rating in DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE (1969), were allowed only two years later in this A-rated feature.

Resubmitted and passed with M-rating in August 1985.

Date: 10-1971  /  Rated: SOA  /  Length: 10505 feet  /  Time: 116:43  /  Censored by 00:46  /  Reason: violence and indecent language

Information provided by Shane Harrison.

This was the second Russ Myer film to be passed by the Australian censors. The first, FANNY HILL (1964), screened a few months earlier. I understand that THE SEVEN MINUTES was cut for a Suitable Only for Adults rating in October '71 but was distributed with the new M-rating the following month. I saw it on its initial release, and for such a salacious film; it seemed to play like a staid Perry Mason episode, mixed with a lot of Peyton Place. An odd hybrid to this 16 year old.

Here is what was missing. Times refer to the 115:23 (PAL) Arrow DVD.

12:13 – 00:16 cut approximately: Gerry unsuccessfully attempts sex with Sheri while George watches, before violently taking over and raping her. Various views of Gerry's unsuccessful sex attempt and Sheri's rape were removed. The film switches with jack hammer editing between Wolfman Jack at his studio, whose voice can be heard on the transistor radio in the apartment, and the activities of the three occupants. The cuts are very quick and scattered throughout this disturbing scene.

26:23 – 00:02 cut: George tells Mike Barrett to "fuck off" while giving him the middle finger. The word "fuck" was allowed to be said later on during the trial.

37:27 - 00:04 cut: A nine-second flashback of the rape scene was shortened.

43:47 – 00:16 collectively cut: Mike visit's Norman Quandt's pornographic film studio. As he walks through the studio, various softcore views of actors performing were removed.

51:29 – 00:07 cut approximately:  Various distorted views of an 8mm pornographic film being screened at a party at a corrupt official's house.
